Gouves, Crete is a typical “happy holiday” destination; an area which has been developed due to the gradual increase of tourism over the years. Although there are 4 hotels and 4 B & Bs, the majority of accommodation in Gouves is self catering, including some fabulous villa and apartment complexes. With very good weather between May and October, the highest temperature is likely to be around 27°C during the midsummer months, making it a great beach location. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, and good food and drink abounds, so there should be something for even the most finicky eater.
Things to do
Because much of Gouves, Crete, has been developed specifically for luxury holidays and tourism, there is plenty to see and do while visiting. The Dinosauria exhibition is filled with dinosaurs, their bones and lots of information – a fun day out for all the family. There is also at least one nearby diving school providing lessons for learners and good dives for the more accomplished. The water is very clear and visibility underneath is excellent during the summer. Other water sports are available, including canoeing, paragliding, and there’s even the inimitable banana boat to keep all the kids (and the grown ups) happy. There are unlimited beaches to choose from – not just the ones at Gouves, but also at nearby resorts and villages.
For those who like to explore, there are several rocky coves here and there along the beaches, perfect for poking around during the midday sun, providing a little shelter and interesting rock pools.
For a peaceful break away from the beach, there is an interesting super-steep drive to the top of Mount Ederi, which offers spectacular views from the summit. The very old village of Pano Gouves is lovely to walk around – typical traditional Greece – and there is even a little café and a taverna to get some sustenance for the walk back.
