Some believe that Greek island Santorini, rising steeply out of the Aegean Sea, is the source of the legend of Atlantis and there is undoubtedly something magical about the place.
The southernmost of the Cyclades islands, Santorini is the result of a massive volcanic explosion more than three thousand years ago and is surrounded by sheer cliffs that encircle almost the entire island.
One of the most photographed islands in Greece, stunning Santorini is famed for its whitewashed houses, dug like caves into the steep hillside, its white churches with blue domes and its memorable sunsets. Visitors can sunbathe on the island’s black volcanic sand and marvel at its dramatic rock formations.
Travellers can stay in a luxury suite in the lively capital Fira, perched on caldera cliffs with amazing views of the volcano, a lively town with shops, cafes and nightspots. Donkeys wait at the old port to transport visitors up the 600 steps to the town. Until 1979, this was the only mode of transport but now, there is also a cable car.
Other settlements include Imerovigli, which extends from Fira on a higher cliff and the younger resort Karterados, a traditional village built inside a ravine.
Gastronomic delights abound on the island. Santorini tomatoes, grown on volcanic ash soil, are some of the sweetest and tastiest cherry tomatoes to be had and islanders take pride in their vinsanto dessert wine.
Santorini enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, similar to Crete, with many months of hot, dry sunny weather. Enjoy a holiday on Santorini from late April right through to October.
A holiday in Santorini is sure to be one to remember and every year this unique island is enjoyed by a wide variety of visitors.
