Venice Holidays

Image

Although it is famed for its canals and palaces, there is far more to Venice in Italy than mere buildings on water. It is a city in its own right, but Venice is also comprised of more than 100 islands, many with their own characteristics and histories. Born out of centuries of conflict, innovation, and artistic genius, Venice is stunning and unique.

Venice can be very hot in high summer, although this need not be a problem if visitors are willing to move around slowly and take regular breaks. The latter is an easy task in Venice, where there seems to be a café, restaurant, or bar offering cicheti (a type of Venetian tapas, though it is not proper to call them “tapas” within earshot of the locals) on every corner. Spring, particularly April, and September offer warm but not stifling weather and relatively fewer crowds than in high season, although Venice is always busy.

To sum up

Venice has to be one of the best cities in the world for luxury holidays, offering a wealth of experiences and sights. Why not browse our guide to five-star holidays for further inspiration?

Exploring Venice

Venice epitomises culture, with more museums, galleries, and historic buildings than is possible to visit during one trip. Much of your experience will likely centre in and around San Marco, also known as St Mark’s Square, where cafe-culture is rife if not a little on the pricey side. From this heart of the city, wind your way through narrow cobbled lanes framed by canals...more
