Regularly voted Europe’s Leading Island Destination & World’s Leading Island Destination, this tropical hotspot will have you in awe from the moment you step on its volcanic black sands, stroll its colourful cobbled streets and hike its mountainous landscape. With everything from mountains to seaside vistas in a relatively small space, Madeira is an ideal destination for visitors who wish to try a variety of activities and explore without spending too much time travelling.
The capital, Funchal, is particularly geared toward tourists and every amenity imaginable is available for visitors. It is also the location of one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world on New Year’s Eve which can be seen from several viewpoints at the marina in Funchal or from a cruise ship out on the water. During the rest of the year, golfing, sailing and a wide variety of other water activities are popular, as is trekking. Boat tours also come highly recommended, and one of the most popular is the trip out to Porto Santo, one of Madeira’s smallest islands. Here you’ll find excellent trekking, horse riding, snorkelling and sunbathing.
The year round warm climate of Madeira makes it an attractive holiday location with a moderate climate ranging from approximately 19°C in winter to 25°C in the summer. Rainfall averages less than an inch per month in the summer, rising to four inches during the winter. There is no real rainy period and even in winter there is dry weather and plenty of sunshine to enjoy.
