If you’re seeking a good all round Caribbean holiday destination, then look no further than the Dominican Republic. This is the perfect blend of Latin party spirit fused with the synonymous laid back approach that has come to symbolise this colourful and exciting destination. Soft white sands, palm trees swaying in the soft breeze and throw in a little ‘Merengue’ and you have all the ingredients for your own little fiesta!
The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean Sea and comprises the eastern portion of the island of Hispaniola. It is the second largest country in the Caribbean and is its most popular tourist region. It’s not hard to see why! The Dominican Republic boasts a stunningly varied topography, flora and fauna – with soaring mountain ranges, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps and arid deserts. It boasts a gorgeous tropical climate and is a great holiday destination for couples, families and groups of friends.
The Dominican Republic’s major attraction is its stunning coastline – mile upon mile of silky smooth, palm-fringed beaches which are dotted with luxurious all inclusive resorts. Visitors can experience a great selection of water sports and can also take to the fairways on its numerous excellent golf courses. There are fantastic mountain biking and trekking routes and visitors can go on safari tours of the densely forested interior. The Dominican Republic also boasts the first European city in the new world in Santo Domingo. Culture buffs should be sure to check out the stunning cathedral, castle and monastery of the old town – which has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. The Dominican Republic’s peak season falls between December and April – though climatic conditions vary considerably across the country.
Punto Cana is arguably the most established of the resorts which boasts a palm lined beach front and tempting blue waters. This is a great option for families, couples and keen snorkelers, as the waters shelve gently. La Romana offers a hint of Latin spirit combined with a typical beach holiday offering great hotels, tourist shops and popular beach. By complete contrast, a remote hideaway on the north coast of the island is the untouched resort of Samana for a truly laid back feel.
