The sunshine coast in the south of Spain, once a collection of quiet fishing villages, has long been a hugely popular destination for Brits, seduced by its hot climate and beautiful beaches. Despite tourist development on a massive scale, the Costa del Sol has retained its relaxed Andalucian welcome.
More than a hundred miles of beaches, marinas, hotels, vacation villas, golf courses and nightclubs beckon, offering the chance to find a secluded cove or hang out with the A-list crowd on stretches of golden sand in celebrity beach clubs. Bars range from the “laid-back” to the sophisticated and the atmosphere is truly international.
For action, the western Costa del Sol – stretching all the way to Gibraltar – combines the vivacious atmosphere of the region’s vibrant capital, Malaga, with the hugely popular resorts of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, picturesque Fuengirola and glitzy Marbella.
For those who prefer their holiday to move at a slower pace, the Eastern Costa del Sol is much shorter and less developed with its less well-known destinations include charming Estepona, tranquil El Angel and the caves of Nerja.
Weather
The Costa del Sol has a mild climate and almost year-round sun. Spring starts early here and the region has the best January weather in Europe.
