Located on India’s west coast and looking out over the Arabian Sea, Goa is the smallest state in the country and one of the most popular tourist destinations. Goa is unique on the Indian subcontinent. For five hundred years it was a colony of Portugal and it didn’t achieve independence until the late eighties. Today it still retains a distinctive Iberian flavour – in its food, architecture and arts – and is a fascinating destination for all history and culture buffs. The main attraction of Goa, though, is its stunning coastline and its hinterland of spice plantations and peaceful waterways. Visitors should be sure to explore the charming villages of the state’s interior and to sample its delicious rice and seafood cuisine.
