Porto City Breaks

Porto City Breaks

Porto is a stunning time-weathered city that clings dramatically to the hillsides above the beautiful River Douro. At just 124km from the Spanish border, this atmospheric capital of the North is the second most important city in Portugal and you’ll see why it is fast becoming a great destination to discover!

Today, the city remains a thriving and colourful centre, which manages to blend its commercial activities with characteristic ‘Old World’ charm. A perfect example is the riverside district of Ribeira, which is a vibrant, atmospheric quarter with a growing number of bars, bistros and restaurants, all perfect for enjoying those fresh sardines and delicious local wines. It’s a great place to people watch and soak up the amazing atmosphere of the dramatic architecture. Visit the lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia, where famous port wine families including Calem, Offleys, Taylors, Sandeman and many more produce their wine. Try a spot of tasting and soak up the various varieties.

The region also boasts three UNESCO World Heritage sites: the historic centres of Porto itself, Guimaraes and the Alto Douro wine region. An oasis of natural beauty, we’d highly recommend a tour to discover the beauties beyond the centre.
